The astounding influence of Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ impact around the world is amazing. I’m here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil doing ministry and a little vacation time with Carolyn. It’s been a wonderful trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, then Montevideo, Uruguay and now here. Soon I leave for Uberlandia, Brazil and then I’ll finish in Sao Paulo, which might be about the time you read this.

Here’s a video I recorded a couple of days ago on our sightseeing tour around the city.

At the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian in Rio de Janeiro.

In this video, I referenced two books about Jesus’ impact around the world throughout history. The first is What if Jesus Had Never Been Born by D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe. I read it years ago, but have never forgotten it because I was profoundly impressed. I wrote a summary in an article with the same title.

The second book is How Christianity Changed the World by Alvin J. Schmidt. This is the one I’m currently reading. I’m again astounded at the impact of Jesus.

Jesus’ impact around the world is just astounding!

The following short essay does a good job summarizing Jesus’ impact around the world throughout history:

One Solitary Life.

He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He worked in a carpentry shop until he was thirty, and then for three years he was an itinerant preacher.

When the tide that popular opinion turned against him, his friends ran away. He was turned over to his enemies. He was tried and convicted. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. When he was dead, he was laid in a borrowed grave.

He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never owned a home. He never went to college. He never traveled more than two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompanies greatness. Yet all the armies that ever marched, and all the governments that ever sat, and all the King’s that ever reigned, had not affected life upon this earth as powerfully as that One Solitary Life.

While on a Prayer Retreat recently, I hiked by the Sikes Adobe here in San Diego County. It was built in 1870 and is the only remaining building of Bernardo, California (near the current area called Rancho Bernardo). It reminded me of the importance of building stuff that will last.

So much of what we work so hard to build here on earth will soon pass away. The company we work for, the trophies we win, the money we earn, the business we build, even the children we raise. All of these are temporary, lasting from a few years to perhaps a century.

Sorry if this is disappointing thought for you. But if you haven’t thought much about it, this is a good time to start.

Only a few things will last for eternity. According to the Bible, those are:

The souls of men, women and children. The Word of God.

That is good news for those who connect these two. When people know the Lord, and live by His Word, they build stuff that will last forever.

Which is the point of this short video: Build stuff that will last! Build your life on the Bible. Help others do the same. Focus on eternity.

As quoted in the video, C. T. Studd said, “Only on life, twill soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.”

If you don’t know Jesus and are not building things that will last, please CLICK HERE.

If you think there are other possibilities for eternal life, please read my article 4 Afterlife Theories Debunked.

As a follower of Jesus, it is so very encouraging to know that I can build things that will last for eternity! Sure, other pursuits have meaning. But even working as President of the United States, or leader of another country, is not as significant as investing in eternity.

Jesus said, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36 KJV)

So invest wisely! Build stuff that will last for eternity!

Jesus told the story of a wise man who built his house upon a rock. When the winds, rains and floods came, the house stayed strong on that rock solid foundation. But a foolish man built his house on sand. In bad weather, then house was lost. (See Matthew 7:24-27)

His point: Everyone needs a solid foundation for life—otherwise we’re vulnerable.

Do you have a solid foundation?

Recently while hiking Stonewall Peak I came across a tree growing on a rock.

Watch this brief video to see my one-minute message.

Other passages say similar things about having a rock solid foundation for life:

The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous is established forever.” (Proverbs 10:8, 25 ESV)

The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous will stand.” (Proverbs 12:7 ESV)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6 ESV)

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” (Psalm 1 ESV)
